Woodworking courses in Berlin Neukölln. The main focus lies on traditional wooden joinery as well as use and care of Japanese woodworking tools. These hands on courses include Japanese joinery, Chinese joinery and traditional western joinery. The courses will be held in english and german.

Course: Using Japanese Tools, 12th February 2026

Wispy shavings, quick saw cuts and precisely chopped mortises. Japanese tools seem very mysterious and embued with many rules.

In this workshop I will get you acquainted with Japanese handtools and show you the basics of how to utilize them properly. The main focus will lie on the handplane or kanna, the chisels or nomi  and the saws, also known as nokogiri. After this course you will have a deeper understanding of the basics for using Japanese handtools and have the possibility to further advance your technique.

To test your skills and practice, you will build a small hanging shelf.

From simple to complex, there will be a little bit of everything. By repeatedly cutting joints, you will boost the understanding of joinery physics and you will make leaps and bounds in your handtool technique. When you have finished this course, a myriad of new possibilities will open up for your future woodworking projects.

We will mainly be working in hardwood and be using Japanese hand tools. If you have your own set of tools (be they Japanese or not), bring them with you to deepen your bond.

In this course we will be dedicating orselves to learning the ins and outs of the Japanese hand plane or Kanna. I will be showing you how to correctly set up and tune a new Kanna or how to refurbish an old, rusty kanna to take thin, whispy shavings. We will also be delving into the world of Kanna sharpening and upkeep. Another very important topic we will tackle is working with the Kanna. I will show you the technique to be able to plane wide surfaces or form pieces of wood organically. Also, tuning and general tips and tricks for a better understanding of the kanna.

I still have some vintage Kanna to restore for a surcharge of 50€.
